Some things can only be shown in three dimensions. The internal mechanism of an industrial component. The structural layout of a building that hasn’t been constructed yet. The assembly sequence of a product that exists only in engineering files. 2D animation approximates these; 3D animation renders them accurately.

For organizations communicating about physical products, engineered systems, or architectural projects, 3D animation is the format where visual precision is the point, not just visual appeal. Tetra Films provides 3D animation services in Vancouver for enterprise organizations where the subject matter requires dimensional accuracy. Engineering, industrial, architectural, and product development contexts where the animation has to be technically correct to be credible.

3D product visualization. Photorealistic 3D rendering and animation of physical products for marketing, investor relations, and pre-launch communications. Accurate to engineering specifications: an industrial buyer reviewing a product visualization sees the actual product dimensions, materials, and assembly logic, not an approximation. 3D product visualization is particularly valuable for products that are complex to photograph, not yet manufactured, or require interior views that physical photography can’t capture.

Architectural and real estate animation. Walkthroughs, flythroughs, and spatial visualizations for developments that don’t yet exist. 3D architectural animation renders environments, materials, and lighting conditions at a level of spatial accuracy that 2D illustration and static renders can’t match. Developers, architects, and municipal planning teams use 3D animated video to communicate projects to investors, regulators, and the public before a shovel goes in the ground.

Engineering and technical animation. Mechanism visualization, assembly sequences, exploded views, and process animations for industrial, engineering, and manufacturing organizations. Animation that shows how a system works at the component level: how parts fit together, how a mechanism operates, how an assembly sequence unfolds. This is the category where 3D animation does work that nothing else can, making the interior of a sealed system or the logic of a complex process visually comprehensible.

CGI and photorealistic rendering. Still and animated CGI for marketing content where physical production isn’t feasible. Product launches before physical product exists. Material and finish visualization for manufacturing and industrial supply. Environmental simulation for organizations communicating infrastructure, energy, or construction projects that exist only in planning documents.

3D integrated with live-action. 3D animation composited into live-action footage for hybrid productions. Physical environments with 3D product overlays, engineering visualizations layered into real facility footage, and product demonstrations that combine filmed talent with animated product elements.

When 3D Animation Is the Right Format

The decision between 3D animation, 2D animation, and live-action is a production decision, not an aesthetic one. 3D is the right format when:

The subject has physical dimension that 2D flattens or misrepresents. Machinery, architecture, medical devices, consumer products with complex physical form: any subject where the three-dimensional relationships between components matter to understanding the subject. 2D animation can represent these subjects, but it does so through abstraction. 3D animation renders them accurately.

The subject doesn’t yet exist physically. Pre-construction architectural projects, pre-launch products, development-stage engineering systems. 3D animation builds the subject from design files and renders it as it will exist, allowing organizations to present, market, and communicate about something before it’s real.

The subject can’t be opened, disassembled, or safely filmed. Industrial mechanisms, sealed assemblies, hazardous process environments. 3D animation can show the interior of a component, the operation of a mechanism that can’t be run in a studio, or the sequence of a process that would be dangerous to demonstrate physically.

Visual accuracy is a credibility requirement. In engineering, industrial, and B2B technology contexts, an animation that looks right isn’t enough. The buyer audience knows the product, the process, or the environment well enough to evaluate whether the animation is accurate. 3D animation produced to engineering specifications holds up to that scrutiny in a way that approximated 2D illustration doesn’t.

When 2D or live-action is the better choice. Concept explainers, character-driven narratives, and abstract process communications that don’t require dimensional accuracy are often better served by 2D animation, which is faster and more cost-effective when physical precision isn’t the point.

How We Produce 3D Animation

Brief and technical reference review. The starting point for any 3D animation project is the technical documentation that defines what’s being animated: engineering CAD files, architectural drawings, product specifications, or reference photography. We review all available technical reference before modelling begins. Animation produced without accurate technical reference produces results that fail in front of a technically literate audience.

3D modelling. Building the 3D asset to specification. Geometry developed to the level of detail the animation requires, which varies significantly between a product marketing render and a detailed engineering visualization.

Texturing and lighting. Photorealistic surface treatment and environment lighting that gives the rendered output the material properties and visual context the use case requires. Material accuracy matters particularly for product visualization and architectural animation, where the client is communicating to audiences who will evaluate finish quality and environmental conditions.

Animation and rigging. Movement, assembly sequences, camera paths, and mechanical rigging for components that operate. The animation phase is where the technical logic of the subject is expressed visually: assembly sequences that follow actual assembly order, mechanisms that move as they move in reality, walkthroughs that present spatial relationships accurately.

Rendering and compositing. Final output rendered to the quality standard the use case requires, with post-production integration for hybrid live-action and 3D productions. Delivery in all required formats for the intended distribution channels.

FAQs

The more technical reference we have, the more accurate the output. For product visualization and engineering animation, CAD files (STEP, IGES, SolidWorks, or similar) are the ideal starting point. For architectural animation, we work from architectural drawings, BIM files, or detailed reference photography. For projects without existing CAD or design files, we build models from reference photography and technical specifications, with the client’s engineering or design team confirming accuracy at the modelling stage.

Yes. Pre-production 3D animation from engineering files is one of the most common 3D animation use cases. Organizations use it for investor presentations, product launch marketing, and regulatory or procurement submissions where the physical product isn’t yet available. The production process starts from the CAD or design file rather than a physical reference, which requires close coordination with the engineering or design team to confirm that the animation accurately represents what the product will be.

3D animation renders the product in three dimensions with accurate geometry, material properties, and spatial relationships. It’s the right format when physical precision matters, when the audience needs to understand how components fit together, how a mechanism operates, or what the product will look like in a real environment. 2D animation is faster and more cost-effective for concept explainers, process diagrams, and abstract communications where dimensional accuracy isn’t the point. The choice depends on the subject and what the audience needs from the visualization.

timelines depend primarily on the complexity and length of the animation, the availability of technical reference, and the number of revision cycles in the approval process. A 60-90 second product visualization for a well-documented product with CAD files available typically runs 4-6 weeks from brief to delivery. More complex projects, including architectural animations, multi-scene engineering visualizations, or productions requiring extensive modelling from reference photography, run longer. We confirm timeline estimates during scoping once we’ve reviewed the technical reference and project scope.

Yes. 3D composited into live-action is a standard production technique for hybrid productions: physical environments with 3D product overlays, facility footage with animated mechanism visualization layered in, and product demonstrations that combine filmed talent with animated product elements. The compositing requires careful matching of camera movement, lighting conditions, and perspective between the live-action footage and the 3D render, which we handle in post-production.
